Information for Applicants

During the opening session of the Society of Breast Imaging Fellows meeting at RSNA 2014, there was discussion on how to improve the current interview and offer process for residents applying to breast imaging fellowship programs.  Since that time, the Society has taken the initiative to form a Breast Imaging Fellowship Committee; Gary Whitman, MD (chair), Rachel Brem, MD, Phil Evans, MD, Debra Monticciolo, MD and Murray Rebner, MD. As a result of this committee’s research and hard work, the SBI is pleased to announce the first Breast Imaging Fellowship Match will take place in 2017 for the 2018 appointment year.

There are many benefits of the match. It allows applicants and programs an opportunity to consider all options before making a decision and allows the resident to apply one year in advance of entering a fellowship which provides them ample exposure to breast imaging so they can make an informed decision about their careers. Fellowship Programs must meet the following criteria: be accredited or affiliated with an ACGME program (your institution’s residency program meets this criterion), sign a sponsorship agreement, and agree to the set time frame as indicated by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the company that will manage the breast imaging fellowship match.

The date pattern for the match is:

•       March 22, 2017: Registration opens

•       April 26, 2017: Ranking opens

•       May 17, 2017: Quota change deadline

•       May 31, 2017: Ranking closes

•       June 14, 2017: Match Day

•       July 1, 2018: Training begins

In order to meet this requirement, the SBI is asking that all programs participating in the match agree to not make any offers to candidates in 2016. In order to participate, please sign and agree to the terms as set for by the SBI Memorandum of Understanding. Please email the signed form to info@sbi-online.org.

Why is SBI taking on this endeavor?

  • As the preeminent organization for Breast Imaging, it only makes sense that the Society of Breast Imaging should step in to ensure a fair and transparent process for future breast imagers.
  • As the go-to resource for residents taking their next steps in their career we want ensure proper time and exposure to breast imaging has occurred prior to making any decisions about fellowship.
  • As the voice for breast imaging professionals this is what we should be doing to alleviate some of the unnecessary stress and anxiety for the next generation of breast imagers.

What we need from you:

  • Commitment: To ensure the success of this program we need 100% participation. Whether your program is 6/6 or 9/3, you are eligible to participate.
  • Communication: There is a limited window of opportunity. So we need you to not only help us share this information, but communicate the importance and benefits of participating to participants as well.
  • Cooperation: It will be a difficult first step; however the success of the fellowship match program depends on your willingness to not make any offers outside of the match.

How does this benefit your program?

  • Allows for programs to rank the best candidates that are interested in your institution.
  • Provides a fair and transparent process for everyone; It eliminates the pressure on applicants to make a decision before completing all interviews.
