Beginning on July 24, 2017, the ACR will implement the 2016 ACR Digital Mammography Quality Control Manual into the accreditation process. Facilities who chose to use the 2016 ACR Digital Mammography Quality Control Manual may submit phantom images obtained with the ACR Digital Mammography Phantom and QC results using the new manual for accreditation of their 2D full-field digital mammography systems.

The Radiology Business Journal (7/5, Walter) reports, “William Thorwarth Jr., MD, American College of Radiology (ACR) CEO, spoke with HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD,” last month “to discuss ‘unnecessary federal regulations and administrative requirements,’ according to the ACR.” The Journal adds, “Cynthia Moran, ACR executive vice-president on government relations, and CMS Administrator Seema Verma also took part in the meeting.” The article points out that “the ACR published a brief Q&A with Thorwarth about the meeting.”
The Society of Breast Imaging and more than 300 organizations and institutions signed a letter to urge Congress to increase funding to the National Institutes of Health. The letter requests an additional $2 billion to the NIH in 2018.
The Wall Street Journal (5/17, Loftus, Subscription Publication) reports a study conducted by researchers with the American Cancer Society found that detection of some cancers occurred earlier thanks to increased healthcare access under the Affordable Care Act. Data show modest improvement in early detection rates for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer.
