FDA: Facilities Must Ensure that Mammography Physics Surveys Performed

The FDA reminds facilities that it is their responsibility to utilize the services of a qualified medical physicist to survey the their equipment, to oversee the equipment-related quality control (QC) program and to perform mammography equipment evaluations (MEE) on x-ray units and image processors, whenever such evaluations are necessary.

SBI Member Michelle Rivera, MD, head of American Women Unite for Breast Cancer Screening talks about the continued confusion and frustration “an era of misinterpretation and misinformation in breast cancer screening” has caused. “The Task Force recommendations create further confusion among women, who remain unsure when to get screened. Physicians as well must weigh conflicting information as they seek to guide their patients. The good news is that many of the nation’s leading medical organizations support screening at age 40.”

SBI Immediate Past President, Murray Rebner, MD, FSBI, Director of Breast imaging at Beaumont Hospital highlights some of the flaws in the recent recommendations in The Detroit News: “Scientifically speaking, the USPSTF appears to have used only a small selection of studies, many of them involving outdated mammogram machines. By Institute of Medicine standards, the USPSTF recommendations may not even be considered ‘trustworthy.’”

University Hospitals doctor pushes for early mammograms, despite new guidelines

During a recent interview SBI Member Donna Plecha, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at University Hospitals urged women to begin screening at age 40, despite the USPSTF's recommendations, "I disagree. I really think that many studies have shown that mammography saves lives in women between the ages of 40 and 49. My fear is that death rates from breast cancer will go up in that age group if they don't get screened."
